Finished: "Anchors Away, Matey!" Skirt ( Vogue 8603)

Well hello dear readers! It's been a long time since I have written a post here. But, don't despair, as I have a finished object to show you today.

I finished a fantastic little navy blue skirt that is perfect for a day out on my yacht. You know, if I owned a yacht. I must admit, I love anything with a nautical flair, and when I spotted this pattern at Joann's I knew it would be perfect for a button decorated skirt.

This skirt did not come together without and hiccups though. I had finally stitched the lining in when I decided to try it on. Much to my dismay when I attempted to zip it, the zipper separated and broke! Out came the lining, out came the zipper, and then back in went a new zipper and back in went the lining. It was definitely worth it in the end though.

Here are some more details:
Pattern: Vogue 8603 ( A still in print modern pattern)
Size: I cut the 16, but took in the center back seam just a bit for a little more snug fit
Outer Fabric: Some sort of suiting from the Goodwill, $1
Lining Fabric: Leftover taffeta lining from my Romance, Rekindled jacket, ~$.50
Buttons and Zipper: From estate sales, cost negligable
What I love: This skirt fits so so well! I love the buttons and the fact that this pattern takes so little fabric.
Dislikes: The way they have you construct this skirt, the facing ends up on top of the lining, only tacked at the seams. I fell like a lined skirt should not have a facing flapping around on the inside. I would like to make this skirt again, but I will be seeking out a different way to deal with the facing/lining. I also wold like it to be just a tad bit longer. It rids up a lot when I sit down since it is so fitted.

Finished: "Pass Me a Cupcake, Mrs. Cleaver" Apron

I finally have another finished object ladies and gentlemen! I made an apron so dripping with sugar and housewifey-ness it brings tears to my eyes. An apron with such characteristics must have an awesome name of course, so I present to you the " Pass Me a Cupcake, Mrs. Cleaver Apron."

The details:
Pattern: Simplicity 2592 ( A retro re-release from the Simplicity archives and still in print)
Fabric: Hot pink polka dot quilter's cotton from Joann's red dot section
Lining Fabric: A super sheer poly/cotton shirting from fabric.com
What I changed: The way this pattern is written it does not call for a lining fabric, but instead the edges are to be encased in bias tape. Thee packs of bias tape to be exact. Well, I had pinned on about 1/2 pack of bias tape and was sick of it, so I decided to line it instead. I simply cut out every piece, with the exception of the shoulder straps and waistband, in the lining fabric and stitched right side to right side and then turned.  I encased the shoulder straps within the bib by pinning the straps inside of the bib so they ended up on the outside when I turned. Easy as pie, er a cupcake, and it gives it a nice drape to boot.
Make again: Maybe one day. Since I lined it, it did take a lot of fabric for an apron.
Recommend to others? If aprons are your thing, then I say go for it!

Are You There, Hoarders? It's Me, Rebecca.

I think the title of this post may say it all readers. So, let's cut to the chase, shall we? More sewing stuff hitchhiked it's way home with me today. 40 patterns, books of needles, 40s sewing books, and more fabric. I am on the fast track to being a hoarder. It doesn't bother me in the slightest. I intend to die in 80 years or so, from injuries sustained from being buried in sewing supplies. I think I now hove somewhere in the range of 600-800 patterns,, including my modern ones. Should I count? Would anyone care to see the massive stash one day?

This is about half the pattern haul, plus the needles, and sewing books. I will post the rest in another post. The cost for all the sewing goodies and fabric combined? $14!

There were doubles of some patterns.

Those slippers are just too neat!

Score! My first couturier pattern and it's uncut!

Estate Sale Fabric Haul

Hello readers. I thought that I'd share with you the fabric that followed me home from last Saturday's estate sale. It had been a while since I  had I had found any fabric, so this was a fun surprise. Whomever lived in the house that I went through was definitely a loved of the classic Model T car. Every sort of Model T trinket, gadget, and fabric ever printed were accounted for in their home.

Don't forget, until the end of January, BLOGSALE, gets you 15% off in my Etsy Shop.

( Also, please excuse these photos. It was dark before I took them, so I had to employ the ever icky flash and no matter what I did some of the fabric would not cooperate on the hangar.)

Antique and Vintage Pattern Haul

I bought more patterns dear readers! It seems I have had good luck lately finding sewing patterns. I hope by writing that I don't curse my luck. This is a pretty small pattern haul, compared to my usual ones, but it does include the first antique patterns I have ever found, dating to around the turn of the century. It also happens to be my most expensive pattern haul to date, at a pricey $23, well pricey to me anyways.

I also came home with about 40 yards of fabric, some vintage, which I will have posted in the coming days. I also have a question for you, readers, I am considering selling the antique patterns. If you were in possession of them, would you sell them? Don't get me wrong, they're really neat, but I feel there may be others that can appreciate them more than myself. I love vintage patterns, but I don't feel the antique ones are very usable, and would most likely end up shoved down in a tupperware tub in my closet. That seems like a sad life for something so old.
