SEWING RAGE!!

Have you ever been sewing and made a mistake so big, so hideous, so un-fixable that you entered into a self induced sewing rage complete with quick toss of the seam ripper across the room? I would have been able to answer no had you asked me this question half an hour ago but that is just no so anymore.

For the past week or so I have been working on a Simplicity Project runway dress, and today I was nearing completion. Last night I selected one my beloved vintage metal zippers that matched oh so perfectly, and today I attempted to sew the zipper into the dress. my first attempt didn't go so well, so I took a break, ripped it out, and resewed. The second attempt wasn't perfect, but I deemed it decent, and went to open up the basted together seam... Does anyone see where this is going?

I ATTEMPTED TO OPEN UP THE SEAM WITH A LITTLE TOO MUCH FORCE, AND MANAGED TO SLICE A HUGE GASH AT LEAST SIX INCHES LONG IN MY DRESS!!!

This is what went through my mind as I chucked the seam ripper...$%*(@#%^*&^%%@!#$^&*&()^%#@@#$%&*()(*&^%$#@!@$&*()(*&^%^()(*&@#$##$%^*&^^&*^%$#@#$%^&*()(*&^!!

Please tell me I am not the only one who has ever ruined a project in the home stretch? Has anyone else made an awful, un-fixable mistake?

Don't worry, I retrieved the seam ripper but it is on strict probation until further notice.

I wish you all happy, mistake free sewing!

UPDATE: I DO have enough fabric to re-cut the piece that I sliced through. Only time will tell if I actually end up finishing this or if it ends up in the "I'll get to it one day" pile. :]

  1. Any chance of salvaging by hiding the repair under a bow/ribbons/fabric flower/button/ruffle/lace?

  2. Oh yup - definitely been there. I once melted a giant hole in a dress on the final pressing... there was no return!

  3. dfr- I am going to see if I can cut a new piece, but I am 99% sure I don't have enough fabric. I like the ribbon or lace ideas, I may have to see if I could do some mending and cover the stitches.

lazystitching- Thanks for sharing! It makes me feel better to know others have been there as well. :]

  4. My mom told me not too long ago: the biggest secret in sewing is learning how to cover up mistakes! And all these years I thought she was just that good that she didn't make mistakes ... nope. She's just that good at covering them up or making them look intentional.

  5. Oh, Rebecca, that is the WORST feeling ever. I have definitely been there, as well. With Simplicity 2250, I sewed in the lining 3 different times - it still didn't end up right, but the fabric had been sewn too many times to hold up to another round. I was so close to throwing it in the dumpster, then lighting the whole darn thing on fire. Major sewing mistakes can be so, so frustrating!

This is why champagne was invented, I'm convinced - to calm sewists at the end of their ropes! ;)

  6. Oh golly, that sounds horrible. Any chance you have enough room to sew the original zipper seam up, thus covering the sliced portion, and move the zipper to a different seam, like at the side.

  7. What a terrible feeling!!! :/ I know exactly what you're talking about. Good luck with this project. I did a final-ironing before donning one of my garments that I sewed. For some reason (maybe I was in a hurry or very excited?) I turned the heat up higher than it should have been, set the iron down on my skirt and -SIZZZZLE!- I burned it! A huge burn mark on the front of my skirt from the too-hot iron. I was so pissed at myself!!

  9. I have done that, and sure enough, it went into the "Someday" pile! I've found that white wine and 80's music help the pain a bit.

  10. Thank you all so much for your comments. It makes me feel much better knowing that I am not the only one who has had a disaster. :]
